Chapter 4 - The Shattered MirrorThe revelation hung in the air between us, heavy and suffocating. I left the mansion that evening in a daze, the autumn wind biting through my sweater. Nothing made sense, yet everything clicked into place with terrifying precision.

When I unlocked my front door, the house was dark. Mark was sitting at the kitchen island, a bottle of bourbon half-empty beside him. He didn't look up when I walked in.
"Where were you?" his voice was flat, laced with cold irritation. "It's past seven. The sink is clogged again, and the kids didn't call."
"I was working late with Mr. Walker," I said, setting my bag on the counter. My voice lacked its usual apologetic tremor.
Mark finally looked up, his eyes narrowing. "Working late? Doing what? Pouring tea for a senile old man? You're spending more time in that mausoleum than you are in your own home, Laura. You're getting ideas above your station."
Ideas above your station.
The exact phrase my grandfather used to say to my mother. The exact phrase Ernest said Clara’s first husband used to crush her spirit.
For the first time in fifteen years of marriage, I didn't shrink back. I didn't murmur an apology or rush to start dinner. I stood straight, planting my feet firmly on the tile floor, just like Ernest stood leaning on his cane.
"I'm not pouring tea, Mark," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "I'm figuring out who I am."
Mark stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back against the wall. "Are you losing your mind? You're a housewife, Laura! Without me, you're nothing! You can't even pay the electric bill without my checkbook!"
He took a step toward me, his chest puffed out in anger, expecting me to cower.
Instead, I stepped forward to meet him. "Check my purse, Mark," I said coldly, pulling out the envelope of my first two weeks' wages from Ernest. "I'm not dependent on your permission anymore. And tomorrow, I'm finding out what else that old man knows about my family."

Mark's face flushed red with fury, but for the first time in our marriage, silence fell because he didn't know what to say to the woman standing in front of him.
Hook for Facebook: When her cold, controlling husband screams, "Without me, you're nothing!" she pulls out her own paycheck and looks him dead in the eye with a terrifying smile.
