Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Family TreeMy heart pounded against my ribs as I stared at the sketch. The resemblance was uncanny, almost supernatural.

"Mr. Walker... what is this?" I whispered, my voice shaking. "I don't understand. Is this some kind of joke?"

Ernest lowered himself heavily into his leather armchair, motioning for me to sit across from him. The room felt smaller suddenly, closing in around us as the autumn shadows stretched across the floor.

"Clara wasn't just my wife," Ernest said, his voice raspy with emotion. "She was an architect's daughter from Boston. In 1968, her father disowned her because she refused to marry a man she didn't love. She ran away with nothing but a suitcase and a sketchbook. I found her sitting on a bench outside a train station in Chicago, crying so hard her shoulders shook."

He paused, looking down at his trembling, age-spotted hands.

"I asked her why she was crying," he continued. "And she looked up at me and said, 'I walked all this way to find a life, but all I found was an empty road.' Sound familiar, Laura?"

A lump formed in my throat. I couldn't speak.

"You aren't just my caregiver, Laura," Ernest revealed, leaning forward. "Three months ago, your friend Rose came to my door. She brought me a local historical society pamphlet with a photo of you volunteering at the library. When I saw your face, I thought I had gone mad. I hired you because I needed to know if ghosts could walk backward through time."

"I'm not a ghost," I managed to choke out.

"No," Ernest agreed gently. "You're flesh and blood. But you're sleepwalking through your own existence, just like Clara did before she learned how to fight back. And your husband... Mark... does he know who your maternal grandmother was?"

My breath hitched. "My grandmother died before I was born. My mother never talked about her family. She said they abandoned her."

Ernest reached out and tapped the cover of the leather journal. "They didn't abandon her, Laura. Clara left this house forty years ago, running from a man who tried to cage her brilliant mind. And now, history is repeating itself down to the very last heartbeat."
