Chapter 16 - The Ultimate BetrayalThe public hearing sent shockwaves through the city. By evening, local news channels were broadcasting headlines about City Hall's corrupt backroom deals with real estate developers. Councilman Thomas Reed hastily announced a "medical leave of absence," effectively resigning in disgrace.

Defeated, humiliated, and cornered by the federal investigation, Arthur and Julian Walker realized their empire was crumbling. Their personal assets, tied up by Ernest's legal traps, were freezing up fast.

Late that night, as I sat at the kitchen island in the mansion reviewing the foundation's architectural schedules, a sudden, frantic knocking hammered against the front door.

It wasn't a violent kick this time. It was desperate, erratic, and terrified.

I walked down the grand hallway, unlocked the heavy deadbolts, and pulled the door open.

Standing on the porch was Julian Walker, shivering in the cold rain, his hair disheveled and his expensive suit soaked through.

"Julian?" I asked, keeping the door half-closed with the safety chain on. "What are you doing here? Did your brother send you to beg for more pennies?"

"No—no, Laura, please, you have to listen to me," Julian stammered, tears mixing with rainwater on his cheeks. "Arthur’s gone. He packed his bags, cleaned out our corporate reserve accounts, and boarded a red-eye flight to Zurich an hour ago. He left me holding the bag!"

I stared at him coldly. "That sounds like a family tradition. Why are you telling me this?"

"Because the federal investigators are freezing my personal accounts tomorrow morning!" Julian cried, pressing his hands against the door frame. "I'm ruined, Laura! I lost everything! But... but I know something. Something about Ernest's death. Something Arthur hid from you."

My heart skipped a beat. I unlatched the chain and pulled the door wide open. "Step inside. And you better start talking right now."

Hook for Facebook: The desperate younger step-brother shows up at her doorstep in the pouring rain, confessing that his fugitive brother fled the country—and holding a dark secret about Ernest's final days.
