Chapter 13 - The Fracture

By dawn, the tension within the estate had reached a boiling point. The morning mist clung to the manicured lawns like a shroud, obscuring the perimeter walls where armed patrols moved with rigid, mechanical precision. Inside the tactical briefing room, the air smelled of stale coffee, burnt gunpowder, and impending war.

Lorenzo stood at the head of the long obsidian table, staring down at a digital holographic map of the estate and the surrounding coastline. Around him stood his remaining inner circle—Marco, Dante, and two tactical commanders brought in from the overseas divisions.

"Julian’s reconnaissance units have been probing our southern gate for the past forty-eight hours," Dante reported, tapping a glowing red point on the map. "They aren't launching a full-scale assault yet. They’re testing our response times. They want to see where our blind spots are."

"They don't have blind spots," Lorenzo corrected coldly. "They have what I gave them to see."

Marco exchanged a cautious glance with Dante. "Boss, are you saying the security leaks were intentional?"

"Calculated," Lorenzo corrected, straightening his cuffs. "We let Julian's scouts believe the western service corridor is unmanned between two and three in the morning. We let them think Clara and Lily are sleeping in the main guest wing instead of the reinforced subterranean vault beneath the library."

"And if Julian takes the bait?" Dante asked, his hand resting instinctively on his holster. "If he breaches the west wing?"

"Then he walks into a killing floor," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a register that made even seasoned veterans swallow hard. "I want every exit sealed. No quarter. No negotiations. Anyone wearing Julian’s colors who steps foot on this property does not leave alive."

Before Marco could acknowledge the order, a sharp, piercing alarm shrieked through the subterranean corridors. It wasn't the exterior motion sensors. It was the internal biometric grid inside the main residential manor.

Warning: Unauthorized access detected in Sector Four. Private Quarters.

Lorenzo went completely still. Sector Four was the primary residential hallway leading directly to the nursery.

"They bypassed the outer perimeter," Marco breathed, his eyes wide. "How?"

"They didn't bypass it," Lorenzo whispered, a terrifying realization dawning across his features. "They had an inside key."

Lorenzo didn't wait for elevators. He bolted from the war room, taking the marble stairs three at a time, his boots thunderous against the stone. Marco and Dante scrambled behind him, weapons drawn, their breath coming in ragged gasps. The estate was under siege from within, and the target wasn't the money, the ledger, or the empire.

The target was Lily.
