Chapter 4 - The Inner Circle

The walnut-paneled war room smelled of bitter espresso and impending violence. Lorenzo sat at the head of the massive obsidian table, his fingers steepened beneath his chin. Around him stood his five top lieutenants—the core pillars of the Moretti syndicate. One of them was a traitor.
"Elena Vance didn't poison herself," Lorenzo stated, his voice dangerously calm. "And she didn't smuggle herself into my estate for fun. For five years, I thought she was hiding in South America with my family's financial ledgers. Instead, she was living in my west wing, working as a maid, while someone in this room systematically poisoned her."
A heavy silence fell over the room. Dante, the head of security, shifted uncomfortably, his eyes darting toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-slicked courtyard.
"Boss," Dante began cautiously, "are you sure it was internal? The staff turns over every six months. Anyone could have brought contaminated food or—"
"The poison was administered via her daily vitamin supplements," Lorenzo interrupted, sliding a plastic evidence bag across the table containing a small amber bottle. "Supplements that are exclusively delivered to the private domestic quarters. Quarters that require a high-level security clearance to enter. A clearance only held by the six people in this room... and the head housekeeper."
Valerie, the austere, iron-willed head housekeeper who had served the Moretti family for twenty years, paled instantly. She took a half-step backward, her hands trembling as she clutched her clipboard.
"Mr. Moretti," Valerie stammered, her voice cracking. "I swear to you, I never checked Clara’s personal lockers. I only assigned her the west-wing maintenance duties because she requested a quiet workspace. I didn't know she had a child!"

"You didn't know she was Elena Vance, either, did you?" Lorenzo asked, standing up so abruptly his chair screeched against the mahogany floor. He walked slowly around the table until he stood directly in front of Valerie. "Elena’s father stole forty million dollars from my grandfather's Swiss accounts before he vanished. Everyone thought Elena took the money. But the ledgers weren't in South America. They were in that lockbox in the linen closet."
Lorenzo slammed his palm down on the table, the sharp crack echoing like a gunshot. "And whoever poisoned her was trying to make sure she never told me where she hid them."
