Chapter 19 - The Sanctuary

Two weeks later, the Moretti estate looked entirely different.
The armed checkpoints along the perimeter had been scaled back, replaced by subtle, integrated security that didn't feel like a prison camp. The roses in the courtyard were in full bloom, their sweet fragrance drifting through the open French doors of the grand library.
Inside, the heavy oak table was covered not with weapons blueprints or shipping ledgers, but with bright, colorful finger-paintings, a half-built puzzle, and a small stack of children's books.
Clara sat on the plush velvet sofa by the window, wearing a soft cream-colored dress that replaced the simple maid's uniform of her past life. She was reading a storybook aloud, her gentle voice rising and falling in rhythmic cadences.
Lily sat cross-legged in her lap, pointing eagerly at an illustration of a white rabbit. "And then what happened, Mama?"
"And then," Clara smiled, glancing up as the heavy study door clicked open, "the knight came home, and they lived happily ever after."
Lorenzo stepped into the room. He had traded his usual black suit for a simple charcoal shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He walked over to the sofa, kneeling down so he was eye-level with both of them.
Lily immediately dropped her book, threw her arms around Lorenzo’s neck, and squealed, "Daddy!"
Lorenzo caught her easily, pressing a rare, tender kiss to the top of her dark curls before setting her down gently on the rug with her toys. He turned his attention to Clara. Her brown eyes were warm, filled with a deep, unbreakable trust that had been forged in the fires of survival.
"The council meeting concluded an hour ago," Lorenzo said softly, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "The ledger has been sealed in the national archives under government protection. Julian and his loyalists are locked away permanently. No one will ever threaten you or Lily again."

Clara placed her hand over his, feeling the steady, powerful warmth of his pulse. "And the syndicate?"
"The syndicate is changing," Lorenzo replied, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips. "We’re stepping out of the shadows, Elena. Starting today, the Moretti name stands for protection, not fear."
