Chapter 28 - The Burning Horizon

Dawn broke over the Moretti estate, but there was no golden sunlight—only the harsh, orange glare of massive fires consuming the outer administrative buildings and the thick, oily black smoke billowing into the gray morning sky.

The courtyard was a scene of calculated devastation. Syndicate security forces had neutralized the remaining intruders, but the cost was staggering. Half the compound was reduced to smoking ruins.

Inside the temporary command post set up in the underground bunker, Lorenzo stood over the tactical table reviewing the damage report. Marco and Dante stood beside him, both nursing bandaged injuries.

"The explosives were planted weeks ago," Marco reported, his voice grim. "Disguised inside structural support renovations approved by the previous administrative board. Whoever planned this had access to the architectural blueprints dating back twenty years."

"Julian’s inner circle," Lorenzo said flatly, leaning his palms against the obsidian table. "Even with Julian locked away in the black site, his financial backers—the old-guard council members who wanted to maintain the illegal smuggling rings—were still operating in the shadows."

"What are your orders, Boss?" Dante asked, standing straight. "Do we hunt them down?"

Lorenzo looked across the room toward the reinforced medical cot where Clara sat holding Lily. The little girl had finally fallen asleep, exhausted from terror and tears, her small thumb tucked safely in her mouth while Clara stroked her dark curls with gentle, rhythmic movements. Clara looked up, meeting Lorenzo’s gaze across the room. There was no fear in her eyes anymore—only an unbreakable, flint-hard resolve.

"No," Lorenzo said, standing up straight. "We don't hunt them down one by one. We draw them out where they can't hide."

"How?" Marco asked.

"We broadcast the ledger," Lorenzo stated calmly.

Marco and Dante both stared at him in stunned silence.

"Boss... the ledger contains the financial records of every syndicate capo, corrupt politician, and international cartel leader in Europe," Marco warned. "If you release that data to the public and the international authorities, you destroy the entire criminal underworld—including the Moretti empire."

"Let it burn," Lorenzo replied, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable finality. "An empire built on blood, extortion, and innocent children hiding in closets deserves to turn to ash. We aren't criminals anymore, Marco. We are a family. And I will burn every last stone of this estate to the ground before I let anyone threaten my wife and daughter again."
