Chapter 8 - Race Against Time

Back at the Moretti estate, the medical wing was bathed in harsh, sterile white light.
Lily sat on a leather armchair in the corner of the trauma room, clutching her stuffed rabbit. Marco stood guard by the door, occasionally glancing through the glass panel at the monitors where Dr. Althaus and his team were fighting a desperate battle to keep Clara’s failing heart beating.
"Is my mommy going to wake up now?" Lily asked softly, looking up at Marco with eyes that were far too old for a three-year-old.
Marco swallowed hard, forcing a reassuring smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Yes, little princess. Your daddy... your uncle Lorenzo went to get the medicine. He always gets what he wants."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the medical wing blasted open. Lorenzo strode in, soaked to the bone, his dark hair plastered to his forehead, holding a small cryogenic cylinder in his gloved hand.
"Althaus!" Lorenzo barked, tossing the cylinder across the room. "The neutralizing compound. Administer it now!"
Dr. Althaus caught the cylinder with trembling hands, quickly loading the synthetic serum into an intravenous drip. The medical staff worked with frantic speed, plunging the antidote directly into Clara’s central line.
For thirty agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The heart monitor continued its slow, erratic beep.
Lily slipped off the chair, her bare feet padding softly across the tile floor. She walked right up to the side of Clara’s bed, reached out with one tiny hand, and gently grasped her mother's limp fingers.
"Mama," Lily whispered, her voice cracking with unshed tears. "The bad man with the cold eyes got the medicine. You have to wake up now. We can go home."
A faint, miraculous shudder ran through Clara’s body. Her eyelids fluttered. Slowly, painfully, the dark lashes parted, revealing heavy, hazy brown eyes.
Clara turned her head slightly toward the sound of the small voice. Her lips parted in a dry, breathless whisper.
May you like
"Lily..."
A collective sigh of relief swept through the room. Dr. Althaus checked the monitors, his face breaking into a wide smile. "Her vitals are stabilizing. The neurotoxin is neutralizing. She's going to make it."
