Chapter 20 - The Rising Sun

The golden hour of the Italian evening painted the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and crimson.
Out on the expansive stone terrace overlooking the Mediterranean, a long mahogany table had been set for three. There were no armed guards standing behind the chairs, no tension in the air, only the distant sound of gulls diving into the sparkling surf below.
Lily sat in her high chair, aggressively feeding spoonfuls of mashed strawberries to her old stuffed rabbit, much to the amusement of both her parents.
Clara stood at the stone railing, leaning back slightly as Lorenzo stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms securely around her waist and pulling her back against his chest. She tilted her head back, resting it against his shoulder, letting out a long, contented breath she felt like she had been holding for five agonizing years.
"You know," Clara murmured, watching the sun dip slowly below the horizon, turning the sea into liquid gold, "when I knocked on your door that night, I thought I was walking into my grave."
"You weren't walking into a grave, Elena," Lorenzo whispered against her hair, his arms tightening around her with fierce, possessive devotion. "You were walking home."

Lily dropped her spoon with a loud clatter, clapping her small hands together and shouting, "Look! The sun is sleeping!"
Lorenzo and Clara both laughed—a bright, unburdened sound that drifted out over the gardens, carrying away the ghosts of the past once and for all. The empire of shadows was gone, replaced by something infinitely stronger, built on blood, truth, and an unbreakable love that had survived the dark.
