Chapter 9 - The Reckoning in the Dark

Two hours later, the storm outside had cleared, leaving the Moretti estate bathed in the cold, silver light of a crescent moon.

Clara sat propped up against the hospital pillows, a blanket draped over her shoulders, drinking a cup of warm water. Sitting on the edge of the mattress was Lily, fast asleep with her head resting against Clara’s side, her old rabbit clutched tightly in her arms.

The door opened quietly, and Lorenzo stepped into the room. He had changed into a fresh black shirt, his expression somber yet impossibly complex as he looked down at the woman he had spent five years hating—and secretly longing for.

Clara looked up, her eyes locking onto his. There was no fear in her gaze anymore—only a profound, weary acceptance.

"You found me," Clara said softly, her voice still raspy from the poison.

"You were hiding in my own house," Lorenzo replied, walking slowly to the side of the bed. He stopped just inches away, his dark eyes searching her face. "You let me believe you betrayed my family. You let me exile your father, while you spent five years scrubbing my floors just to keep our daughter safe."

"Your daughter," Clara repeated, a bitter, fragile smile touching her lips. "I didn't want her growing up in a world of blood and bullets, Lorenzo. I thought... if I stayed out of sight, if I lived like a ghost, you would eventually forget about the Vane name."

"I could never forget you, Elena," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a low, intense rumble. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently brushing a lock of hair from her forehead. The touch sent a visible shiver down her spine. "Victor and Valerie are in the holding cells. They tried to kill you to cover up my grandfather's embezzlement scandal—the very lie that drove your family away. They pay for what they did tonight."

Clara looked down at Lily, sleeping peacefully against her side, and then back up at Lorenzo. "And what about us?"

Lorenzo leaned in closer, his gaze burning with a fierce, possessive intensity that brooked no argument.

"There is no 'us' hiding in closets anymore," Lorenzo vowed, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "You and Lily belong right here. In the light. And God help anyone who ever tries to touch you again."
