Chapter 23 - The Anatomy of a Trap

The silence in the tactical war room was so heavy it felt suffocating. The music box sat in the center of the obsidian table, its eerie lullaby finally winding down with a dry, mechanical click.
Clara stood frozen over the table, staring at the photograph of her daughter. Her hands were clenched into fists so tight her knuckles were stark white, her fingernails biting deep into her palms until a bead of crimson appeared.
"Lily," Clara whispered, her voice cracking with a terrifying, primal despair. "They're in the nursery. How did they get into the nursery? It’s biometrically sealed!"
"It’s not biometrically sealed anymore," Lorenzo said, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all human warmth. He looked up at Marco, his eyes burning with a lethal fire. "Run a diagnostic on the primary mainframe. Someone didn't hack the door—they used an override code. A master override code that only three people in this room possess."
Marco’s eyes widened. "Boss... are you saying..."
"I'm not saying anything yet," Lorenzo interrupted, stepping away from the table. "Dante! Bring the shift logs from the security detail for the last twelve hours. Now."
Before Dante could move, the secure comms terminal on the wall chimed. It wasn't an alarm. It was an incoming encrypted video transmission.
Lorenzo hit the manual accept button.
The high-definition screen flickered to life, illuminating the dark room in a pale, sterile blue light. The camera feed showed the interior of the subterranean nursery. The lights were dimmed. In the center of the room stood a tall man wearing a custom charcoal suit, his face obscured by a Venetian silver mask that caught the glare of the monitors.
Seated in a chair beside the crib was a nursemaid—one of the trusted long-term staff—her mouth taped shut, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror.
"Good evening, Lorenzo," a voice modulated through a digital filter echoed from the speakers. It was smooth, cultured, and laced with an unmistakable arrogance. "I trust the music box was delivered safely?"
Lorenzo stepped directly in front of the camera lens, his towering frame casting a shadow over the console. "Whoever you are, if you touch a single hair on that child’s head, I will pull you apart piece by piece and feed your remains to the harbor hounds before sunrise."
The masked man laughed—a low, theatrical sound. "Such dramatics, cousin. Or should I say... former boss? You thought Julian’s arrest ended the opposition. You thought cutting off the head of the snake meant the body would die. But you forgot something fundamental about the Moretti syndicate, Lorenzo. We don't die. We evolve."

Clara shoved past Lorenzo, slamming her hands down on the console, her face inches from the camera. "What do you want? Money? Power? Take the ledger! Take the entire estate! Just leave my daughter alone!"
The masked figure tilted his head slightly, studying her through the silver disguise. "Ah, Clara. Or should I call you Elena Vance? Such a tragic story. The faithful maid who crawled back into the lion's den. You think your little sacrifice saved your family? No, my dear. You simply brought the prize right back to where it belonged."
