Chapter 4 - Crossfire in the Suburbs"Get down!" Clara screamed, lunging forward with athletic speed that caught David completely off guard. She slammed her body into his, tackling him to the floor just as a volley of heavy gunfire tore through the bedroom wall. Splinters of wood and chunks of drywall exploded into the air, raining down upon them like hail.

"Clara—!" David yelled over the deafening roar of automatic weapons fire.
"Shut up and stay low!" she barked, rolling off him and sliding across the polished floor toward the bedroom window. She raised her Glock and fired three rapid shots through the shattered glass into the front yard darkness. A muffled grunt and the sound of someone crashing into the bushes signaled that her aim had found its mark.
"Who is out there?" David demanded, crawling on his hands and knees to the doorway to check on the children. To his immense relief, Lily and Tommy were huddled behind the heavy oak dining table, crying softly but safe from the direct line of fire.
"The Cleanup Crew," Clara panted, reloading her magazine with practiced, terrifying efficiency. "When a high-value asset goes off the grid—or in this case, when a useless analyst comes home early—they don't negotiate. They sanitize."
David's mind raced through the fragments of his ordinary life, trying to piece together the monstrous puzzle. Everything had been a lie. His promotion, his salary, his peaceful suburban life—all of it funded by criminal syndicates using his firm as a front.
"The safe behind the mirror," David said, his eyes locking onto Clara's. "What's in there?"
"Evidence," Clara replied grimly, keeping her eyes fixed on the darkened hallway. "Every single bank account number, every digital ledger, every name of the syndicate bosses in Europe and North America. It's the only leverage we have left to buy our way out of this country."
"And the room at the end of the hall?" David asked, his voice trembling as he finally dared to voice the question that had been haunting him since he walked through the front door. "What's behind that door, Clara?"
Clara paused. Her fierce, hardened exterior flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a look of sheer, haunting terror. She didn't answer immediately. Instead, a heavy, rhythmic thudding began to emanate from the locked room—followed by the sound of scratching claws against the wood.

Scratch. Scratch. Thud.
"That," Clara whispered, her face draining of all color, "is why I locked them away from you. Because what's in that room isn't human anymore."
