Chapter 8 - The Sniper's Choice"Get down!" David roared, instinctively throwing himself over Clara and the children just as a high-powered rifle shot shattered the corrugated metal roof of the shed.

Bang!
A shower of metal shavings and dust rained down upon them.
"They found us," Clara whispered, her face pressing against the dirt. "They must have deployed thermal drones the second the house blew."
"How many?" David demanded, his heart hammering against his ribs as he scanned the darkness outside through a crack in the shed wall.
"At least two operatives, sniper positioning on the ridge above the ravine," Clara assessed, her tactical instincts kicking back in. She reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted thumb drive. "David... listen to me. The data from the safe wasn't just physical paper. I downloaded the master ledger onto this drive before we left the bedroom."
David looked at the small piece of plastic in her hand. "Why didn't you leave it behind?"
"Because it's our only passport out of this nightmare," Clara said firmly. "If we give this to federal internal affairs—not local police, but the federal cyber-crimes division in Washington—they can dismantle the entire syndicate in forty-eight hours. But we have to make it out of these woods alive."
Another bullet pierced the metal wall, inches from where Lily was whimpering softly. David knew they couldn't stay in the shed a second longer. The sniper was zeroing in on their position.
"Clara, take Tommy. I'll carry Lily," David instructed, his voice steely with resolve. "When I say go, we run toward the drainage culvert fifty yards down the ravine. It leads to the old highway drainage system."
"David, it's a straight drop down a concrete slope," Clara warned.
"It's our only chance."
"Go!"

They exploded out of the back door of the shed into the freezing night rain that had just begun to fall. Bullets clipped the branches overhead, showering them with leaves and bark as they sprinted down the steep, slick embankment. Lily buried her face in David's neck, crying in terror, while Clara clutched baby Tommy tightly against her chest, sliding the final ten feet down the muddy slope into the concrete mouth of the drainage culvert.
David dove in right behind them, pulling a heavy iron grating across the entrance just as a burst of automatic gunfire pinged loudly against the concrete wall outside.
