Chapter 12 - Echoes in the DarkFor two agonizing hours, they pushed deeper into the labyrinth. The tunnel eventually opened up into a massive, cavernous chamber filled with rusted remnants of the city's 20th-century subway expansion project—abandoned train cars covered in faded graffiti, crumbling concrete pillars, and twisted iron tracks vanishing into the gloom.

Tommy began to stir, whimpering softly with hunger and fever. His little forehead felt dangerously warm to the touch.

"David, we need to find shelter," Clara said, her voice cracking with maternal panic as she felt the baby's burning skin. "If his fever spikes, we won't be able to keep him quiet if they track us."

David scanned the perimeter with his dwindling flashlight beam. Through the gloom, a rusted metal sign caught his eye: MAINTENANCE SECTOR 4 - SAFE ROOM.

"There," David pointed toward a heavy steel door set into the concrete foundation of an old underground substation.

They scrambled across the gravel tracks, reaching the door. To their utter amazement, the digital keypad on the wall flickered with a faint green light. An emergency backup generator must have still been routing low-voltage power to this isolated sector.

"Clara, try the emergency override code you found in the ledger files," David urged.

Clara’s fingers flew across the keypad, punching in a sequence of numbers: 9-4-0-7-Enter.

BEEP.

The heavy locking bolts retracted with a mechanical hiss, and the door swung open. They tumbled inside just as the beam of a distant searchlight swept across the railway tracks outside.
