Chapter 6 - The PrototypeThe door swung slowly open, creaking on rusted hinges.

Out from the darkened room stepped a figure that defied biology and reason. It stood over seven feet tall, its limbs unnaturally elongated and corded with bulging, dark-veined muscles. Its skin had a sickly, translucent grey hue, stretched tightly over a skeletal frame that seemed to shift and twitch with jerky, insectoid movements. But the most horrifying feature was its face—or lack thereof. Where eyes and a nose should have been, there was only smooth, scarred skin, dominated by a jaw that unhinged like a predator's, revealing rows of needle-sharp teeth.
David’s breath caught in his throat. His brain completely rejected the visual input, locking his muscles in absolute terror.
Clack-hiss.
The creature let out a high-pitched, vibrating screech that shattered the remaining windows in the hallway.
"Run, David! RUN!" Clara screamed, finally snapping out of her trance. She grabbed a fallen gasoline canister from the nearby utility closet, kicked over a standing lamp, and poured the fuel across the hallway floor in a frantic arc.
The creature lunged forward with blinding speed, its long, razor-sharp claws slicing through the air where Clara had been standing a split second before.
"Clara, grab the kids! We're getting out of here!" David roared, snapping out of his paralysis. He reached back through the shattered nursery window, grabbing a heavy garden tool from the patio outside and using it to smash the remaining wooden frame away.
Clara struck a match and dropped it onto the pool of gasoline.
Whoosh!
A wall of blazing orange fire erupted instantly across the hallway, trapping the creature on the other side. The monster shrieked in unholy agony, thrashing violently against the flames as the intense heat forced it to retreat back into the dark room.
"The safe! We forgot the safe!" Clara cried out, her eyes wide with panic as she realized the digital drive containing all the syndicate's secrets was still behind the bedroom mirror.

"To hell with the safe!" David shouted, hoisting Clara bodily through the nursery window into the cool night air where Lily and Tommy were waiting in the damp grass.
As David scrambled out behind them, the entire roof of the hallway caved in with a thunderous roar, sending a pillar of fire and thick black smoke shooting up into the quiet suburban sky.
