Chapter 9 - The Final StandThe drainage tunnel was pitch black, smelling of damp earth, rust, and stagnant water. They waded through ankle-deep runoff for what felt like miles, guided only by the faint glow of emergency exit signs further down the line, until they finally emerged into a concrete maintenance chamber beneath the interstate overpass.

"Are you guys okay?" David whispered, checking Lily and Tommy. Both children were shivering violently from the cold rain and shock, but thankfully uninjured.

"We're... we're okay, Dad," Lily whimpered, her tiny hand gripping his finger. "Are the bad men still following us?"

"No, sweetheart," David said, kissing her forehead with a fierce, protective love. "They can't reach us here."

Clara leaned against the concrete wall, sliding down until she was sitting on the floor, clutching the thumb drive in her hand. "We need to contact Agent Miller," she said breathlessly. "He's an undercover federal marshal I've been secretly communicating with for the past week. He's the only one outside the syndicate we can trust."

She pulled out one of the burner phones from her pocket and dialed a ten-digit number. The phone rang three times before a gruff, tired voice answered on the other end.

"Go," a voice said.

"Agent Miller, it's Clara. We have the master drive," she said quickly, keeping her voice low. "We're under the Interstate 90 overpass drainage exit. The primary asset—Project Chimera—has been compromised at our residence. We need immediate extraction."

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line. A rustling sound, like paper being shuffled. Then, a low chuckle came through the speaker.

"I'm glad to hear you retrieved the drive, Clara," Agent Miller's voice replied, but the tone had shifted entirely. The weary, sympathetic warmth was gone, replaced by a chilling, corporate coldness. "You always were remarkably resourceful."

Clara’s face drained of all color. Her hand began to shake uncontrollably. "Miller...? What is this?"

"Did you really think an undercover federal marshal would operate out of a standard suburban safehouse?" Miller’s voice purred smoothly over the speaker. "Agent Miller is on our payroll, Mrs. Vance. And you just delivered the final piece of our global portfolio right into our hands."

David stared at Clara in absolute horror as the realization hit them both simultaneously.

There was no rescue coming. The trap was complete.
