Chapter 7 - Into the Shadows"Keep moving! Don't look back!" David panted, scooping Tommy into his arms while grabbing Lily’s small hand once more. They scrambled over the wooden back fence of their yard, plunging headfirst into the dense, overgrown woods that bordered the suburban development.

The cool autumn air burned their lungs as they ran blindly through the underbrush. Behind them, the distant wail of sirens began to pierce the night—police cars responding to the massive explosion and gunfire. But David knew they couldn't trust the police. If the syndicate had infiltrated his financial firm and deployed biological assets into his home, their reach likely extended deep into local law enforcement as well.
They ran for nearly twenty minutes until they reached an abandoned railway maintenance shed nestled deep within the tree line.
"Stop here," Clara panted, collapsing against the rusted corrugated metal wall of the shed. She was bleeding from a shallow graze on her shoulder, her clothes caked in soot and mud. "We're... we're safe for a few minutes. They won't track us this deep into the ravine without thermal imaging."
David gently set baby Tommy down on a dry patch of hay inside the shed, ensuring Lily was wrapped tightly in his jacket. Once he knew his children were as comfortable as possible, he turned his full, furious attention to his wife.
"Explain," David said, his voice dangerously low. "Right now. From the beginning. Or I swear to God, I will walk out of these woods with my children and never look back."
Clara looked up at him, her eyes shining with exhaustion and profound sorrow. She didn't flinch from his glare.
"Three years ago, when you got that big promotion at Vanguard Financial, I thought we had made it," Clara began, her voice trembling. "I thought you were just an exceptionally talented risk analyst. But you were actually analyzing shell accounts funded by the Obsidian Syndicate—an international black-ops network dealing in illegal genetic enhancement and human trafficking."
David stared at her, dumbfounded. "That's... that's impossible. I only worked with corporate balance sheets!"
"That's because they manipulated your data feeds, David!" Clara shot back, tears spilling over her lashes. "They used your pristine, honest reputation as a shield so no financial regulator would ever audit those accounts. When I accidentally stumbled upon your digital ledger files while trying to print a family photo from your office laptop, I found the truth. I found the funding records for human experimentation."
David felt the ground spin beneath him. "And the creature... what was that thing?"
"A prototype soldier," Clara whispered, shivering violently. "They call it Project Chimera. When the syndicate realized I knew too much, they didn't just threaten me—they brought the project into our home to ensure my silence. They told me that if I ever contacted you, or if you ever came home early, they would unleash it on Lily and Tommy."

David fell silent. The horrifying reality washed over him. Clara hadn't betrayed him out of malice; she had spent weeks living in an absolute psychological nightmare, playing a deadly game of chess to keep their children alive while waiting for an opportunity that never came.
Suddenly, a red laser dot flickered across the dirt floor inside the shed, resting squarely on Clara's chest.
