Chapter 18 - The Subterranean LaboratoryThe air in the subterranean level was freezing and sterile, smelling sharply of ozone and chemical disinfectants. Rows of glass containment pods lined the massive, industrial laboratory walls, illuminated by an eerie, pulsating blue light.

Inside several of the pods, shadowy, humanoid silhouettes shifted and twitched—early iterations of Project Chimera, kept in cryogenic stasis.
"Keep your weapons ready and flashlights on," the lead strike team member commanded, sweeping his rifle across the corridor. "Sterling knows we're here. The automated lockdown triggered the moment we bypassed the lobby."
They moved methodically down the central corridor, past rows of high-tech server racks and genetic research equipment. Suddenly, the emergency alarm klaxons blared overhead, bathing the laboratory in a pulsing red strobe light.
WARNING: CONTAINMENT BREACH IN SECTOR B.
From the far end of the hallway, heavy iron doors blew outward in a cloud of thick gray smoke. Out stepped a towering, monstrous silhouette—a fully matured prototype of Project Chimera, its elongated limbs clicking against the polished floor as it let out a deafening, vibrating screech.
"Fire!" the strike team leader roared.
A barrage of tactical gunfire erupted down the corridor, tracer rounds lighting up the darkness as bullets impacted the creature's dense, muscular hide. The monster shrieked in rage, charging forward with terrifying, inhuman speed.
