Chapter 5 - The Horror Behind the DoorThe rhythmic thudding against the wooden door grew louder, accompanied by a low, guttural growl that vibrated through the floorboards. Lily began to sob loudly from the dining room table, terrified by the sound.

"Clara, what is that?" David demanded, his voice rising in panic as he gripped her shoulder. "Talk to me! Is there someone else in this house?"
"Not someone," Clara said bitterly, shaking off his hand as she kept her gun aimed at the front hallway. "Something. Two weeks ago, right after you left for your trip, the syndicate sent a warning. They wanted to test my loyalty. They brought... it here."
Before Clara could elaborate, a deafening crash echoed from the back of the house. The kitchen window had been smashed open. Heavy, boots hit the linoleum floor, followed by the cold, mechanical sound of a shotgun being racked.
"They're inside!" Clara yelled, firing two blind shots down the hallway toward the kitchen entrance.
"We have to get the kids out through the side window," David said, adrenaline overriding his fear. He scrambled back to the living room, scooped baby Tommy into one arm, and grabbed Lily’s hand. "Clara, cover us!"
They sprinted toward the side nursery window, the glass already cracked from the earlier explosions. David used the heavy brass candlestick to smash the remaining glass away, clearing a jagged path to freedom.
"Lily, go! Out into the bushes, crawl as fast as you can!" David urged, hoisting his terrified daughter through the window frame. He handed baby Tommy carefully out after her, watching as Lily instinctively cradled her little brother against her chest just as she had done on the living room floor.
"Clara, move!" David shouted, turning back to pull his wife toward the exit.
But Clara didn't move. She was standing frozen in the middle of the hallway, staring in horror as the heavy deadbolt on the mysterious locked room began to turn from the inside.

"No..." Clara whispered, dropping her weapon to her side. "They didn't just send a cleanup crew. They left the prototype behind."
The iron chain snapping with a violent snap echoed like thunder through the house.
