Chapter 19 - Final Confrontation at the CoreThe creature collapsed with a final, shuddering thud just feet away from the strike team, neutralized by concentrated armor-piercing rounds.

"Clear!" the team leader panted, lowering his smoking barrel. "Move to the main control core! Sterling is trying to purge the servers!"
David and Clara sprinted past the fallen monster toward the glass-enclosed master control room at the center of the laboratory. The automated security doors had already jammed halfway, leaving a narrow gap. David squeezed through first, his rifle raised.
Standing inside the control room, frantically typing commands into the master console while packing documents into a leather briefcase, was Mr. Sterling.
The executive froze as he heard the crunch of glass behind him. He slowly turned around, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with a calm, unbothered smirk, though a bead of sweat dripped down his forehead.
"David. Clara," Sterling greeted smoothly, as if they were meeting in a corporate boardroom rather than a ruined laboratory. "I must admit, your tenacity is quite impressive. Most people would have stayed hidden in the dirt."
"It's over, Sterling," David said, his voice ringing with absolute finality as he pointed his weapon straight at the executive's chest. "The servers are locked. The whistleblower network has the global ledger. Your syndicate is finished."
Sterling chuckled softly, casually resting his hands on the edge of the console. "Finished? David, men like me don't fall. Governments change, laws are rewritten, and corporations rebrand. You think a few leaked files will destroy a global network that has funded empires for decades?"
"They won't just destroy the network," Clara said coldly, stepping up beside David with her sidearm raised. "They'll bury you with it."

Sterling's smile vanished. His eyes darted toward the manual override button on the master console—a thermal self-destruct mechanism designed to incinerate the entire laboratory and erase every shred of evidence.
With lightning speed, Sterling lunged for the button.
