Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Plot TwistAs the applause erupted around us and the guests raised their glasses to toast our engagement, the heavy double doors of the ballroom suddenly pushed open.

A hush fell over the room.

A tall, elegant figure stepped inside, wearing a dark trench coat with the collar turned up. As she stepped into the light of the chandeliers, she lowered her hood.

It was Vanessa.

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Whispers broke out instantly. How is she here? Didn't she get sentenced to eight years?

Security guards rushed forward instantly, weapons ready, but I raised my hand, signaling them to stand down. I walked slowly across the polished marble floor toward her, my footsteps echoing in the quiet room.

Vanessa looked thinner, her skin pale, the arrogance in her eyes replaced by a hollow, desperate exhaustion.

"You..." she breathed out, her voice trembling. "You didn't think I'd let you win everything, did you?"

I stopped just a few feet away from her, completely calm. "Vanessa. You're supposed to be in federal custody."

A bitter, chilling laugh escaped her lips. She reached into her coat pocket, pulling out a thick manila folder and tossing it onto the floor at my feet.

"My sentence was commuted this morning," Vanessa smiled, a dark, manic edge to her voice. "Because the federal prosecutor who built your case... just so happens to be my uncle's primary business partner. We played a long game too, Arthur. And the game isn't over yet."

Clara stepped up beside me, her hand sliding reassuringly into mine, her grip firm and unwavering.

I looked down at the folder at my feet, then back up at Vanessa. A slow, knowing smile spread across my face.

"Vanessa," I whispered, stepping closer so only she could hear. "Did you really think I didn't know about your uncle and the prosecutor?"

Vanessa’s triumphant smile instantly froze.

"Every single move you just made," I continued smoothly, "was logged, recorded, and fed directly into the federal grand jury's desk forty-eight hours ago. Turn around, Vanessa."

She spun around in sheer panic.

Standing right behind her at the ballroom entrance were not just security guards, but the Director of the FBI's Anti-Corruption Division, flanked by federal marshals holding fresh, sealed warrants.

"Game over," I said softly as the heavy steel cuffs clicked shut around her wrists for the very last time.
