Chapter 2 - The Whisper in the DarkLater that night, the grand estate grew eerily quiet. The guests had long departed, leaving behind an ocean of half-empty crystal glasses, crumpled napkins, and the lingering stench of fake sympathy.

I sat alone in the dim study, my wheelchair parked by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sprawling manicured lawn. I didn't need the chair. I stood up, stretching my legs—muscles that had retained their strength through secret nightly physical therapy sessions—and walked over to the mahogany desk.

A soft knock interrupted my thoughts.

The door clicked open, and Clara slipped inside. She carried a tray with a steaming cup of chamomile tea, her eyes fixed respectfully on the floor. She froze when she saw me standing by the desk, looking down at her with an intensity that made her gasp.

"Mr. Arthur..." she breathed out, stumbling backward. "Your legs... you're..."

"Hush, Clara," I said, my voice gentle yet commanding as I stepped closer. "If you scream, security will come—though my head of security takes his orders directly from me, so it wouldn't do them much good."

Clara swallowed hard, clutching the tray against her chest. "I... I didn't mean to pry. I just wanted to bring your tea. I can leave."

"Wait," I commanded.

She stopped, trembling slightly.

"Why did you do it today?" I asked, studying her face. "When Vanessa humiliated me, everyone looked away. Even my own flesh and blood laughed. But you stepped up. Why?"

Clara looked up, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce pride. "Because I grew up in a house where cruelty was disguised as power, Mr. Arthur. My father was a rich man who treated everyone like trash, just like Miss Vanessa. Wealth doesn't give anyone the right to strip another human being of their soul. You were sitting there, completely isolated, and... nobody deserves to be invisible."

I stared at her, feeling a strange warmth stir in my chest—something I hadn't felt since before the crash.

"Clara," I said quietly, reaching into my jacket pocket and pulling out a heavy, secure flash drive. "How would you like to be the highest-paid executive assistant in this city starting tomorrow?"
