Chapter 12 - Shadows in the LedgerTwo weeks passed without incident. The media frenzy surrounding Vanessa’s second, immediate arrest slowly died down, replaced by financial reports detailing the complete liquidation of her family’s remaining assets. Martin Sterling’s offshore accounts had been fully seized, and the board of Sterling Enterprises voted unanimously to permanently strip the family name from any executive privileges.

Yet, deep inside the corporate fortress, a strange anomaly appeared on my private desk terminal.
It was 2:00 AM. The office was dead silent save for the hum of the central air conditioning. I sat at my mahogany desk, scrolling through an encrypted subsidiary ledger that Clara had flagged earlier that evening.
"Arthur," Clara’s voice chimed through the intercom on my desk, startling me slightly. "Are you still looking at the Meridian project files?"
"Yes," I replied, pressing the talk button. "Something doesn't add up. The wire transfers from Meridian Logistics to an unknown shell company stopped the day Martin was arrested, but... they didn't vanish. They were redirected."
"Redirected to where?" Clara asked, her footsteps clicking briskly down the hallway before she pushed open my office door, holding a steaming cup of espresso.
"That's the problem," I said, spinning my monitor around so she could see the complex web of digital nodes. "They aren't going to a bank account anymore. They're funding an independent private security firm operating right here in the city—Apex Defense."

Clara’s eyes widened slightly as she read the corporate registration details on the screen. "Apex Defense? Isn't that the firm Daniel used to manage before he quit right after your accident?"
The room went stone cold. Daniel. My former chief of security and one of my oldest, most trusted confidants. The man who had stood silent in the ballroom the day Vanessa humiliated me, lowering his eyes without uttering a single word of defense.
