Chapter 8 - The Final EchoesLegal trials move fast when federal evidence is airtight.

Three months after the boardroom ambush, Vanessa and Martin stood trial in a federal district court. Without the fortune, the power, or their high-priced legal team—who dropped them the moment their accounts were seized—the outcome was swift. Martin received a twelve-year sentence for corporate conspiracy and attempted murder. Vanessa received eight years for complicity and financial fraud.

On the day of the sentencing, reporters crowded outside the courthouse, shouting questions.

A reporter thrust a microphone toward me as I walked down the marble steps, flanked by my security team and Clara.

"Mr. Sterling! Do you have any comment on your ex-fiancée's sentence? Do you regret orchestrating the entire wheelchair charade?"

I stopped, adjusted my jacket, and looked directly into the camera lens.

"I don't regret a single second," I said calmly. "Accidents don't just destroy your body; they act as a filter. They strip away the noise, the fake smiles, and the parasites. They show you who is standing by your side when the world thinks you've lost everything."

I turned, looking back at Clara, who offered a quiet, supportive nod.

"And as for the chair?" I added with a faint smile. "It served its purpose. Now, it's time to walk forward."
