Chapter 16 - THE BROTHER’S CHOICE

The hospital gown hung loosely over seven-year-old Benjamin’s small frame as he sat on the edge of the sterile white medical bed. Across the room, visible through a large glass partition, Chloe lay sleeping peacefully, connected to a rhythmic heart monitor.
Harrison walked into the room, pulling up a chair beside his son. He felt sick to his stomach. Asking a seven-year-old child to undergo a bone marrow extraction to save his sister was a weight no human being should ever have to bear.
“Hey, Benny,” Harrison said softly, offering a weak smile.
“Hey, Dad,” Benjamin replied, swinging his legs back and forth. “Is Chloe going to be okay?”
“She’s going to be fine, buddy,” Harrison said, taking Benjamin’s small hand in his. “The doctors... they figured out how to make her completely better. But they need your help to do it.”
Benjamin looked up, his stormy gray eyes—the exact mirror of Harrison’s—full of fierce determination. “What do I have to do? Do I have to give her my blood?”
“Something like that, son,” Harrison’s voice cracked. “It’s called a bone marrow donation. It’s... it’s going to hurt, Benny. For a little while. They have to use a special needle in your hip. You don’t have to do it if you’re scared. We can find another way—”
“I’m not scared,” Benjamin interrupted quietly.
Harrison stared at him, stunned. “Benny...”
“When we were sleeping on the cardboard boxes, and Chloe was coughing, and Mama was crying in the kitchen because there was no food... I promised myself that I would do anything to keep my sisters safe,” Benjamin said, his voice carrying a maturity far beyond his seven years. “If taking some of my bone makes Chloe stop coughing, then do it right now.”
Harrison pulled his son into a fierce, suffocating embrace, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes.

“You are stronger than I ever was, Benjamin,” Harrison whispered fiercely. “You’re the best of both of us.”
Two hours later, the procedure was underway.
