Chapter 10 - THE MIDNIGHT INTRUDER

The north wing of the estate was usually quiet at this hour, illuminated only by the soft glow of security lights cutting through the manicured hedges. But tonight, heavy footsteps echoed across the marble tiles of the private library.

Victoria Vance stood before the mahogany desk, her designer heels clicking sharply against the floor. She wasn’t wearing her usual immaculate jewels; instead, she wore a dark trench coat, her hair disheveled, her eyes wild with desperation. She slammed a heavy, leather-bound ledger onto the desk just as the double doors flew open.

Harrison stepped into the room, his security team fanning out behind him with tactical weapons drawn. Sarah stood right behind him, her expression a mix of caution and fury.

“Victoria,” Harrison said coldly, his voice like ice. “You have a lot of nerve stepping foot on this property. My security team has orders to shoot on sight.”

Victoria let out a harsh, broken laugh, leaning against the desk for support.

“Go ahead, Harrison! Have them shoot me!” she screamed, her voice cracking. “Do you think I care anymore? Arthur is gone. Your precious father took his own life this afternoon, and he left everything to me—except he left the accounts completely frozen by federal investigators!”

The room went dead silent.

Sarah gasped, stepping back. Harrison stared at his stepmother, his expression unreadable.

“What are you talking about?” Harrison demanded.

“The federal grand jury didn’t stop with the board vote,” Victoria sneered, tears of rage pooling in her eyes. “They traced the offshore money laundering straight back to Arthur’s primary accounts. He couldn't handle losing the dynasty, the power, the control. He swallowed a bottle of pills two hours ago.”

She pointed a shaking finger directly at Sarah.

“And it’s all because of her. Because of that nobody from the slums who couldn't stay hidden!”
