Chapter 17 - THE AWAKENING

The operation lasted four hours.
When the green light above the surgical ward finally illuminated, signaling success, Sarah collapsed into a chair in the waiting room, completely drained of energy. Harrison sat beside her, holding her hand, both of them watching through the glass as Benjamin was wheeled into a recovery room right next to Chloe’s.
Three days later, the miracle happened.
Chloe opened her eyes.
The hacking cough that had plagued her for months was entirely gone. Her skin had lost its pale, sickly gray tint, replaced by a healthy, rosy glow. She looked around the bright, sunlit room, saw Benjamin sitting up in the bed next to hers with a bandage on his hip, and smiled.
“Benny,” she whispered, her voice clear and strong.
“Hey, troublemaker,” Benjamin grinned, tossing a small stuffed rabbit across the gap between their beds.
Sarah stood in the doorway, watching her children laugh and play in real, comfortable beds for the first time in their lives. She felt a warm pair of arms wrap around her waist from behind.
“We did it,” Harrison murmured against her ear.

Sarah leaned back against him, letting out a breath she felt like she had been holding for eight long years.
“We did it,” she agreed softly.
