Chapter 4 - THE REUNION IN THE RUINS

Harrison dropped to his knees, ignoring the dirt and water pooling on the floorboards. He looked at Benjamin’s hollow cheeks, the worn-out clothes, and the three little girls waking up in confusion under the yellow blanket.
“Benjamin,” Harrison breathed, his voice trembling as he reached out with shaking hands.
Benjamin didn’t back away. Something in the man’s eyes—the exact same shade of stormy gray as his own—told him this stranger was telling the truth.
“Are you… are you really my dad?” Benjamin whispered.
Harrison pulled the boy into his chest, burying his face in Benjamin’s messy hair as a sob broke through his iron composure. “I am, son. I am so sorry I wasn’t here. I’m so sorry.”
Behind them, elite pediatric medics rushed into the apartment with portable oxygen and diagnostic gear, immediately surrounding little Chloe, who was struggling to draw a breath.
“Sir, we need to get the children to Sterling Memorial Hospital immediately,” the lead medic reported, securing an oxygen mask over Chloe’s face while lifting Madison and Zoe into specialized thermal carriers. “The youngest has severe bronchial inflammation and malnutrition.”
Harrison stood up, lifting Benjamin into his arms as if the boy weighed nothing at all. He looked down at Victor Kovacs, who was still pinned to the floor by two armed guards.
“Mr. Sterling! Wait! I didn’t know—” Kovacs stammered, sweat beading on his forehead.
“You’re about to learn what happens when you touch my family,” Harrison said flatly. He looked at his head of security. “Buy this building. Evict every tenant, rehouse them in luxury apartments at my expense, and then bulldoze this structure down to the foundation. I want a parking lot built over it by Tuesday.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And where is Sarah?” Harrison demanded, looking at his watch. “She finished her shift at the diner twenty minutes ago.”
“Sir,” Marcus Vance’s voice came through Harrison’s earpiece. “We have a problem. Sarah Parker never made it to her shift tonight. Her manager says she was called away by an emergency dispatch regarding her apartment building—but she never arrived here.”

Harrison’s blood ran cold.
Sarah hadn’t been trapped at work. She had been intercepted.
