Chapter 19 - THE EMERGENCY NUMBER REPLACED

Six months after the wedding, the old cracked flip phone sat inside a glass display case mounted on the wall of Sarah and Harrison’s private study in their new home in downtown Detroit—a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the sound of four children running down the hardwood hallways.

The phone no longer had five contacts stored inside it.

It had only one.

Late one evening, after Benjamin, Madison, Chloe, and Zoe had finally gone to sleep, Sarah sat at her mahogany desk reviewing foundation grants while Harrison poured two cups of hot tea.

He set a cup down beside her, leaning over to kiss the top of her head.

“You’re working too late again, Chairwoman Parker,” Harrison teased softly.

Sarah smiled, leaning back against his chest. “I’m just reviewing the blueprints for the new Detroit community housing project. We’re breaking ground on the old tenement site next Tuesday.”

Harrison looked out the window toward the glittering skyline of the city. “Kovacs’ old building?”

“Mmm-hmm,” Sarah nodded. “It’s going to be a playground and a free medical clinic. Right where the cardboard boxes used to be.”

Harrison wrapped his arms around her, resting his chin on her shoulder. “You know, I was thinking about that phone call. The night Benjamin dialed.”

“What about it?”

“If you hadn't left that number on the charger... if he hadn't been brave enough to press call... I never would have known you existed.”

Sarah turned around in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, her eyes sparkling with mischief and profound love.

“Oh, I think you would have found me eventually, Harrison Sterling,” she whispered. “A billionaire can’t hide from a Parker forever.”

Harrison laughed, pulling her in close for a deep, lingering kiss as the city lights twinkled outside their window.
