Chapter 12 - Shadows in the PenthouseBack at the Grand Zurich Hotel, the penthouse suite felt less like a luxury residence and more like a tomb.

Julian slumped into a velvet armchair, his hands buried in his face. The silence between him and his mother was heavy, suffocating, and fractured by the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.

Evelyn stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, staring out at the city she thought she ruled. Her reflection in the glass looked older, gaunt, and stripped of the fierce, untouchable aura she had worn like armor for decades.

"She knew," Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking slightly in the empty room.

Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. "What are you talking about, Mother? Who knew?"

"Victoria," Evelyn hissed, turning around sharply, her fingernails digging into the fabric of her tailored skirt. "She didn't just stumble into our lives as a naive orphan from Chicago. She allowed us to adopt her into the periphery. She allowed us to fund our expansion through her blind trusts. She wanted us to build the empire so large that when she pulled the rug, the fall would crush us completely."

Julian swallowed hard, the color draining entirely from his face. "So... we're ruined? Completely?"

"We have our personal accounts," Evelyn said, though the words tasted like ash in her mouth. "Enough to live comfortably in exile. But Vance Enterprises? Kurozawa Tech? They belong to her now. We are ghosts, Julian. Just like she was supposed to be."
