Chapter 4 - Turbulence at 35,000 FeetMeanwhile, thousands of feet above the freezing expanse of the Pacific Ocean, the cabin of the Vance family private jet was bathed in a soft, ambient blue light.

Julian Vance swirled a glass of vintage scotch, staring out the window at the endless sea of clouds below. He looked relaxed, the tension of the past year’s corporate battles finally evaporating from his shoulders.

Across the aisle, his mother, Evelyn, was reviewing physical paper documents clipped inside a leather binder. Her reading glasses sat low on her sharp nose.

"Are you sure she won't cause a scene at the embassy, Mother?" Julian asked, taking a sip. "Her passport is locked in the safe with us, but she’s resourceful."

Evelyn didn't look up from her papers. "Resourceful? Julian, she is an orphan from the backstreets of Chicago whom I fished out of obscurity. Without our money, without her phone, and without a passport, she is a ghost in a foreign country. By the time she figures out how to wire money from a Western Union using a thumbprint, we will already have finalized the Kurozawa merger and stripped her voting rights from the trust."

"It feels a bit harsh," Julian muttered, though there was no real guilt in his voice—only the dull echo of convenience. "She was a good wife."

"She was a liability," Evelyn corrected sharply, snapping the leather binder shut. "A woman with no known lineage who holds veto power over our family board is a ticking bomb. We defused her. Now, sleep. We land in Zurich in fourteen hours, and the Vance empire will finally be entirely under our control."

Suddenly, the cabin lights flickered from blue to a harsh, blinking amber.

The low, steady hum of the jet engines stuttered.

The pilot’s voice crackled over the intercom, tight with sudden panic: "Uh, ladies and gentlemen, we have an unexpected automated directive from international flight control. We are being ordered to divert immediately to Anchorage, Alaska, due to an urgent security flag on the registry."

Julian sat straight up, spilling a drop of scotch onto his designer trousers. "Diversion? That's impossible. We have diplomatic clearance!"

Evelyn’s face went completely bloodless. She stared straight ahead, her fingers digging into the leather binder until her knuckles turned white.

"Get me the pilot on the cabin phone," she hissed. "Now."
