Chapter 5 - The Resurrection of the OrphanWhile Julian and Evelyn were being forcefully rerouted to a freezing tarmac in Anchorage for a grueling, multi-hour interrogation by federal customs, I was sitting in the first-class lounge of Narita International Airport, wearing a bespoke designer suit that cost more than a secondhand car.

Kenji’s network had worked miracles. A brand-new passport under my maiden name—completely legitimate, backed by sovereign diplomatic credentials that even Evelyn’s lawyers couldn't touch—sat neatly on the table beside my boarding pass.
My phone, a secure military-grade satellite device, buzzed quietly against the marble table.
An encrypted text message from Kenji popped up: Plane grounded in Alaska. Customs is tearing their luggage apart looking for 'unregistered financial contraband' that magically appeared on their manifest.
I smiled, taking a slow sip of green tea.
My phone buzzed again. An email notification from the Swiss registry.
Welcome back, Director.
They thought cutting off my lifeline would leave me helpless. They didn't realize that I was the one holding the scissors to their entire financial ecosystem.
My flight to Zurich was boarding in ten minutes. I stood up, smoothed down the lapels of my jacket, and picked up my carry-on bag. The reflection in the airport's floor-to-ceiling glass windows wasn't a stranded housewife anymore. It was an apex predator returning to reclaim her territory.
As I walked down the jet bridge toward the aircraft, I pulled out my phone and composed a short, perfectly polite text message to Julian.

“Have a wonderful layover in Alaska, darling. Don’t rush back—I’ll handle the board meeting for you.”
