Chapter 9 - The Queen’s Arrival

"She's here," Ethan muttered, standing up so abruptly his chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor.

Hannah’s breath hitched. Panic clawed its way up her throat, threatening to choke her. She instinctively pulled the heavy cashmere blanket higher over her shoulders, her eyes darting toward the bassinets where the twins were sleeping.

"Hide me," she whispered, the raw terror in her voice cutting straight to Ethan's core. "Ethan, please, if she sees me here with your babies, she will destroy us. She’ll use every lawyer and politician she owns to take them away from me."

Ethan’s jaw tightened into a rigid, granite line. A cold, lethal fury flashed in his dark eyes—the same fire that made him one of the most feared surgeons in Chicago. He walked over to the heavy oak door, locking the deadbolt with a sharp, echoing click, before turning back to face her.

"She is not touching you, and she is not touching my children," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a low, absolute growl. "Stay in this room. Do not open the door for anyone."

He strode out of the private suite, pulling the heavy door shut behind him.

Downstairs in the grand foyer, the massive crystal chandelier cast a brilliant, glittering light over the marble floor. Victoria Caldwell stood by the mahogany staircase, wrapped in a designer fur coat, her silver hair styled into an immaculate chignon that made her look like cold royalty. Two burly private security guards stood awkwardly behind her.

"Ethan!" Victoria’s sharp voice echoed through the cavernous hall as she spotted her son descending the stairs. "What on earth is going on in this house? My security team tells me the west wing gate alarm was triggered three hours ago, and half the domestic staff has been locked out of the guest quarters. Have you lost your mind?"

Ethan reached the bottom of the landing, stopping two steps up so he looked down at his mother with an icy, unreadable expression.

"Good evening, Mother," Ethan said smoothly, his voice devoid of any warmth. "What brings you to my estate at two in the morning?"

Victoria narrowed her eyes, stepping closer with an air of aristocratic entitlement. "Don't play games with me, Ethan. I pay attention to my investments—and to my family. One of my hospital administrators leaked an unusual emergency override from St. Catherine's tonight involving a high-risk uninsured OB patient who vanished from the recovery room against medical advice. And my estate manager tells me your Mercedes drove through the private gates with an unauthorized passenger."

She paused, her sharp gaze scanning his rumpled shirt and the faint traces of dried surgical soap on his wrists. A cold, horrifying realization dawned in her eyes.

"Don't tell me..." Victoria gasped, her voice dropping into a hiss of pure venom. "That wretched little gold-digger from five years ago... she's back, isn't she?"

Ethan’s face hardened into a mask of pure ice. He descended the remaining two steps, towering over his mother with an intimidating presence that made even Victoria take an involuntary step back.

"Her name is Hannah," Ethan said, his voice dripping with venomous steel. "And she is the mother of my children. Which means she is under my protection. If you ever refer to her as a gold-digger in my house again, Mother, I will strip you of your board seat at the foundation and you will never see your grandchildren as long as you live."

Victoria stared at him, her mouth opening in sheer disbelief. "You're threatening me? Over a cheap street rat who trapped you with a bastard pregnancy?!"

"They are Caldwell heirs," Ethan replied coldly. "And they are staying right here."

Before Victoria could retort, a sudden, frantic pounding echoed from the top of the grand staircase, followed by a terrifying sound that made both of their blood run cold: the piercing, uncoordinated wail of a newborn baby in distress.
