Chapter 34 - The Uninvited Guest

Three weeks passed in a blur of quiet domestic bliss, legal restitution, and the joyful chaos of raising twin infants. The transition of the Caldwell Foundation into the public Vance-Caldwell Healthcare Trust made national headlines, painting Ethan and Hannah as modern medical philanthropists.
It was a crisp Friday evening when the peace of the estate was interrupted once more.
Hannah and Ethan were sitting in the private library, reviewing architectural blueprints for the new pediatric clinic, when a sharp, frantic knocking echoed from the main entrance downstairs.
Ethan frowned, standing up immediately. Estate security had been completely restructured, and visitors were strictly scheduled.
“Stay here,” Ethan instructed, walking briskly toward the double doors of the study.
Before he could reach the hallway, the heavy oak door of the library swung open. Standing in the doorway, out of breath and looking disheveled in a heavy trench coat splattered with mud, was a man neither of them expected to ever see again.
It was Arthur Vance.
His legal career was in ruins, his name dragged through federal court indictments for corporate fraud and insider conspiracy, and he looked desperate, his eyes darting frantically around the room.

“Arthur,” Ethan said, his voice dropping instantly into a cold, lethal register as he pulled his phone out to dial estate security. “You have exactly three seconds to get off this property before I have the federal marshals drag you out in handcuffs.”
“Don’t—don’t call them!” Arthur stammered, holding up his hands defensively. He took a staggering step into the room, his gaze locking directly onto Hannah. “I didn't come here to cause trouble. I came to give you something your mother-in-law paid me a fortune to hide forever.”
