Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

Hannah was struggling to sit up when the door to her recovery room slammed open against the wall.

Ethan stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his dark eyes burning with an intense, suffocating fire that made the air in the room feel heavy and electric. He didn't say a word as he walked slowly toward her bed, his gaze locked onto hers like a predator tracking its prey.

"She's stable," Ethan said, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all professional detachment. "The collapsed lung was decompressed just in time. Both of them are going to live."

Hannah squeezed her eyes shut, a fresh wave of tears spilling over her lashes as she breathed a ragged sigh of relief. "Thank God... Oh, thank God..."

"Stop thanking God, Hannah," Ethan snapped, his voice cracking with suppressed rage as he slammed both hands down on the mattress on either side of her hips, trapping her against the pillows. "Start explaining."

Hannah flinched, her eyes flying open to meet his blazing stare. "Explaining what?"

"Don't play games with me!" Ethan roared, the veneer of his cool professional composure completely shattering. "Those babies have my eyes! They were born thirty-two weeks premature, which means they were conceived right around the time you were working the charity gala downtown four months ago—the exact night you snuck into the VIP lounge looking for me before you vanished!"

Hannah’s breath hitched. She tried to turn her head away, but Ethan reached out, his warm, callused fingers gripping her chin firmly, forcing her to look straight into his eyes.

"Look at me and tell me they aren't mine," he demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of desperate hope and venomous fury. "Tell me I didn't just save my own children from dying on my operating table!"

"What does it matter if they are?" Hannah cried out, the pain and humiliation of the past five years finally erupting from her chest in a torrent of furious defiance. She slapped his hand away from her face with surprising strength. "Would it have changed anything if you knew? You would have done exactly what your mother wanted! You would have dragged me into family court, accused me of being a gold-digger trying to trap a Caldwell heir, and paid a team of high-priced corporate lawyers to strip my babies away from me before they were even born!"

Ethan flinched as if he had been physically struck. "I would never—"

"You already did!" Hannah screamed, her voice cracking with raw, jagged agony. "Five years ago, you didn't even give me thirty seconds to explain before you threw me out into the rain! You believed the worst about me because deep down, you always believed you were better than me! A billionaire surgeon and a poor warehouse worker—we were never equals in your world, Ethan, and we never will be!"

Ethan stood frozen, the words hitting him like a physical blow. Every defense he had prepared crumbled into dust. He looked at the pale, exhausted woman lying before him—the callused hands, the old burn scars from working twelve-hour shifts just to afford rent, the hollow circles under her eyes—and for the first time in his life, he truly saw the devastating cost of his family's pride.

Before he could answer, the door swung open again.

Dr. Marcus Vance stepped into the room, holding a clipboard, looking grim. "Ethan, we have a problem. Social services is downstairs. The hospital billing department flagged the emergency admission, and because there's no insurance, no emergency contact, and the mother collapsed at an industrial site with high-risk complications... child protective services has been automatically notified. They're asking questions about custody and discharge."

Ethan’s head snapped toward the door, his eyes narrowing into cold, lethal slits. "Who called them?"

"Nobody called them. It's standard hospital protocol for unverified vagrants admitted through the ER," Marcus replied cautiously. "And right now, they're heading up to room 412 to take custody of the twins as soon as they're discharged from the NICU."
