Chapter 39 - The First Patient

Six months later, the Vance-Caldwell Pediatric Center officially opened its doors to the public.
The waiting room was bright, filled with natural sunlight streaming through towering glass windows, colorful murals on the walls, and the gentle chatter of families and children.
Hannah, now serving as the executive director of the foundation, walked down the polished hallway in a crisp white lab coat, holding a clipboard as she checked the morning schedule.
Dr. Ethan Caldwell walked out of Exam Room Three, pulling down his stethoscope with a tired, satisfied smile on his face. He spotted Hannah approaching and met her halfway down the corridor.
“How was our very first patient?” Hannah asked, a proud smile touching her lips.
“A little boy named Leo—ironically enough,” Ethan chuckled, slipping his stethoscope into his pocket. “Severe asthma flare-up, but we stabilized him in twenty minutes. His mother didn't have insurance, but thanks to the foundation endowment, she didn't pay a single dime.”

Hannah beamed, leaning in to give him a quick, affectionate kiss on the cheek. “Just like your father always dreamed.”
“Just like our family always dreamed,” Ethan corrected, wrapping his arm around her waist as they looked out the large glass doors toward the front entrance, where a steady stream of families walked into a sanctuary of healing and hope.
