Chapter 31 - Ashes of the Past

The sirens faded into a dull hum as the police cruiser carrying Julian Sterling and Arthur Vance merged into the morning traffic below Sterling Towers. Inside the executive boardroom, the dust of the corporate coup settled into a quiet, profound stillness.
Hannah stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, looking out at the sprawling expanse of Chicago waking up under the autumn sun. The heavy wool coat she wore felt like armor—a stark contrast to the threadbare sweater she had worn years ago when she first arrived in the city with nothing but a dream and a scholarship.
Ethan stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms securely around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
“It’s really over,” Hannah whispered, her voice carrying a sense of weightlessness she hadn't felt in half a decade. “Your mother’s empire... the foundation... the patents. It’s all gone.”
“Not gone,” Ethan corrected gently, turning her around to face him. He reached up, cupping her cheek with his warm, callused hand. “Transformed. The federal government is freezing the stolen assets, which means the original patent holding created by your father, Dr. Richard Vance, is being legally reinstated. The court has already issued a preliminary injunction recognizing you as the sole surviving heir to the Vance-Caldwell biomedical trust.”

Hannah’s breath hitched. Tears welled in her eyes, not of sorrow, but of a long-overdue redemption. “My father... his name cleared?”
“Completely,” Ethan smiled softly, pressing a tender kiss to her forehead. “His research is going to fund public maternal healthcare across the entire Midwest. No more corporate backroom deals. No more stolen legacies. Your father’s work is finally going to save lives, just the way he intended.”
