Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Past

The silence in the recovery room stretched thin and brittle, broken only by the steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor tracking Hannah’s spike in pulse.

She stared up at him, her chest heaving as the weight of his accusation pressed down on her like a physical blow. Five years ago, she had been a poor scholarship student working three jobs to pay her tuition while Ethan was the untouchable golden boy of the Caldwell medical dynasty. Their love had felt like a fortress against the world until his mother, Victoria Caldwell, stepped in with a dossier of forged bank statements, a fabricated story of extortion, and a cold ultimatum that tore their lives apart.

Ethan had believed his mother’s elegant, devastating lies without giving Hannah a single chance to defend herself. He had looked at her with pure disgust as he threw her packed suitcase onto the wet pavement outside the iron gates of his family estate.

And now, standing over her hospital bed, he was looking at her with that exact same suspicion.

"Why should it matter to you, Doctor Caldwell?" Hannah whispered, her voice laced with bitter ice as she forced herself to meet his intense gaze. "You made your choice five years ago. You chose your mother's wealth, her social standing, and her pure bloodline. I was just a dirty secret you wanted to sweep under the rug."

"Don't turn this around on me!" Ethan slammed his hand down on the metal bed rail, making the equipment clatter. The restraint snapped; five years of suppressed rage, sleepless nights, and bitter resentment boiled over in a single, ragged roar. "You took thousands of dollars from my mother's secretary on your way out the door! You traded our future for a check and disappeared into thin air!"

Hannah’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "I what? I never took a dime from your mother! I threw her hush money right back in her face!"

"Stop lying!" Ethan snarled, his face pale with fury. "I saw the bank transfer receipt with my own eyes. I saw the withdrawal slip signed with your name! You sold our relationship, Hannah, and now you have the audacity to sit there and play the victim?"

"Your mother framed me, you arrogant idiot!" Hannah sobbed, tears finally breaking free as she thrashed against the sheets, her body wracked with pain from the surgery. "She threatened to ruin my brother’s medical school scholarship, she threatened to have me arrested for theft, and when I refused to leave, she forged my signature! I didn't take a single cent! I walked away with nothing but the clothes on my back and a broken heart because you were too blind and cowardly to trust the woman who loved you!"

Ethan froze. The fierce, righteous anger draining from his face, replaced by a sudden, terrifying void. He stared at her, the color draining completely from his skin as her words echoed in the sterile room.

Before he could process the crushing weight of her confession, the door burst open.

A frantic nurse rushed in, clutching a clipboard to her chest, her face white with panic.

"Doctor Caldwell! You need to get to the NICU immediately! Twin B—the little girl—is crashing. Her lungs are collapsing, and we can't get her oxygen levels up!"
