Chapter 18 - The Reckoning at the Estate

It was dusk by the time Ethan’s Mercedes tore through the iron gates of the Caldwell estate, tires screeching against the asphalt as he slammed on the brakes in front of the grand limestone entrance.

He didn't bother using the front door; he stormed through the private service corridor straight up to the grand foyer, his face dark with a lethal, terrifying storm of fury.

"Victoria!" Ethan roared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings with enough force to rattle the crystal chandelier.

The heavy library doors upstairs swung open, and Victoria stepped out onto the landing, looking down with a mixture of annoyance and haughty defiance. "Ethan, stop shouting like a commoner. What is the meaning of—"

Ethan took the stairs three at a time, marching straight up to her with the manila envelope clutched so tightly in his fist that the paper tore. He stopped inches from her face, his dark eyes blazing with a fury so intense that Victoria instinctively stepped back, her breath catching in her throat.

"You lied to me," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, controlled lethalness.

Victoria blinked, trying to maintain her composure. "I have no idea what you're talking about—"

"Don't you dare lie to me again!" Ethan shouted, slamming the forged bank statements and withdrawal slips against the mahogany wall beside her head. "You told me she took your money. You told me she sold our future for a check. You forged her signature, framed her for extortion, and drove her into poverty while she was carrying my children!"

Victoria stared at the papers, her face draining of all color in a single, devastating heartbeat. The arrogant, untouchable matriarch vanished, replaced for a fraction of a second by a cornered, desperate woman.

"I did what was necessary for the family legacy," Victoria snapped, her voice trembling slightly as she tried to regain her footing. "A girl from a broken, penniless background would have destroyed everything we built! She wasn't worthy of you, Ethan, and she certainly wasn't worthy of—"

"She is worth a thousand of you," Ethan interrupted, his voice dropping into a cold, dead whisper that cut deeper than any blade.

He took a step back, pulling out his phone with a shaking hand.

"What... what are you doing?" Victoria asked, her voice finally cracking with real panic.

"I'm calling the board of directors," Ethan said without looking at her. "And then I'm calling the district attorney to file formal charges of forgery, corporate fraud, and malicious harassment against Victoria Caldwell."

Before Victoria could lunge forward or speak another word, the door to the private guest wing down the hallway swung open.

Hannah stood in the doorway, wrapped in her cashmere robe, holding onto the doorframe for support as she looked out into the hallway, her eyes wide with shock as she took in the scene unfolding before her.
