Chapter 37 - The Confession in the Carriage House

Hannah walked slowly toward the center of the room, placing the charred digital drive down on the small wooden coffee table right in front of Victoria.

“Arthur Vance brought us a backup file from Sterling’s secure server tonight,” Hannah said, her voice terrifyingly quiet, devoid of shouting or anger. “It contains the original, unredacted investigation files regarding the laboratory fire twenty-five years ago that killed my father.”

Victoria staggered backward, her legs hitting the edge of the armchair. She grabbed the fabric for support, her chest heaving as she stared at the small black drive.

“It... it was an accident,” Victoria stammered, her regal composure completely shattering into dust. “The wiring in the west wing lab was faulty... the insurance inspectors confirmed it.”

“The insurance inspectors were paid off by your corporate legal team,” Ethan stepped forward, his voice cutting through her excuse like a scalpel. He looked at his mother with a mixture of profound grief and absolute disgust. “You didn't just ruin his career, Mother. You murdered him to cover up your safety violations.”

Victoria buried her face in her trembling hands, letting out a ragged, broken sob that echoed in the small room. The years of power, wealth, and ruthless control had finally stripped away, leaving only a frightened, guilty old woman.

“I didn't mean for him to die,” Victoria choked out, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “We only meant to destroy the prototype data so he couldn't take the patent to a rival firm. The fire... it spread faster than the night crew could control. By the time I realized what my orders had caused, it was already too late.”

Hannah stood watching her, her expression unreadable. For months, she had dreamed of this moment—dreamed of seeing the woman who destroyed her life beg for mercy. But looking at Victoria now, she felt no triumph. Only a profound, heavy sorrow for the cycle of destruction that greed and pride left in their wake.

“You’re going to call the district attorney in the morning,” Hannah said quietly. “You’re going to hand over whatever time you have left to the authorities, and you’re going to sign a full public confession clearing my father’s name once and for all.”

Victoria looked up, her eyes swimming with tears. She nodded slowly, knowing there was no escape left. “I will.”
