Chapter 11 - Whispers in the DarkThe ten-year anniversary celebration had ended, leaving the sprawling Moretti estate wrapped in a peaceful, midnight quiet. Inside the master suite, the city of Chicago hummed far below like a distant, tamed beast.

Lena stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the faint reflection of Dante walking softly into the room, holding two cups of chamomile tea. The diamond and emerald pendant resting against her collarbone caught the moonlight—a gift Dante had given her earlier that evening, symbolizing a decade of survival, redemption, and unbreakable love.
"You're still awake," Dante said softly, stepping up behind her and placing a cup in her hands before wrapping his arms around her waist.
"My mind is racing," Lena admitted, leaning back against his broad chest. "Ten years, Dante. Sometimes I still look at the twins and think back to that tiny hotel room, wondering how we managed to build all of this out of the ashes."
Dante went still. The warmth in his embrace remained, but a shadow crossed his dark eyes—a flicker of old darkness that he kept carefully locked away from the world.
"You built this, Lena," Dante murmured, his voice heavy with reverence. "You brought the light back into a house that was built on blood and secrets."
"And you brought the protection," she replied, turning slightly in his arms to look up at him. "Though... lately, you’ve been looking over your shoulder again. I know that look, Dante. What aren't you telling me?"
Dante sighed, his gaze shifting toward the dark horizon of Lake Michigan. "It’s nothing. Just... business anomalies. A few encrypted messages intercepted from overseas. Old ghosts trying to crawl back into the light."
"Victor Vance is locked away in a black site," Lena said, her voice dropping an octave with sudden tension. "Who else could possibly threaten us?"

"That’s what Mateo and I are trying to figure out," Dante answered, kissing her forehead to mask the sudden surge of unease tightening his chest.
Neither of them knew that miles away, parked just outside the high-security security perimeter of the Moretti estate, a sleek black sedan sat idling in the heavy fog, its headlights completely dark. Inside, a gloved hand opened a dossier labeled with a single word: Dante.
