Chapter 4 - The Spider’s WebWhile Dante was locked in his private war to win back his runaway wife, a much darker storm was brewing in the corporate underworld of Chicago.

In a penthouse suite overlooking Lake Michigan, Victor Vance—a rival syndicate boss and distant cousin to Lena’s estranged family—swirled a glass of amber whiskey. Standing across from him was Sofia Vale, her face bruised with humiliation, her eyes burning with a venomous hatred for the woman who had cast her out.

"Dante cut off all my accounts, grandfather," Sofia hissed, pacing across the expensive Persian rug. "He humiliated me over a nobody like Lena. All because she walked in at the wrong second."

Victor chuckled, a low, grating sound like grinding stones. "Dante thinks he is untouchable because he holds the shipping ports. But a man is only as strong as his weaknesses. And right now, his brilliant, cold-blooded facade has a massive crack in it: his wife."

"She’s hiding somewhere in the north district," Sofia said eagerly. "If we find her before Dante does—"

"No," Victor interrupted, holding up a manicured hand. "We don't touch her yet. If we hurt Lena directly, Dante will tear this city apart brick by brick, and we will all burn in the ashes. Instead... we use her to pry open his safe."

Victor leaned forward, a sinister smile spreading across his weathered face. "Dante has been hoarding shares of the North Shore docks under a private trust—a trust registered under Lena’s maiden name as a silent asset. If we can get Lena to sign over those shares under duress, Dante loses his monopoly, and we take Chicago."

Sofia’s eyes widened in malicious delight. "And what happens to Lena?"

"Once she serves her purpose," Victor smiled coldly, "she becomes a loose end. And loose ends in Chicago have a habit of disappearing into the lake."

Little did the conspirators know, Dante’s intelligence network was already picking up encrypted chatter between Victor’s lieutenants. Back at Moretti headquarters, Mateo slammed a dossier onto Dante’s desk, snapping the mafia boss out of his miserable preoccupation with his wife.

"Boss, we have a bigger problem than your marital dispute," Mateo said grimly. "Victor Vance is making moves. And his target isn't our shipping lanes anymore. His target is Lena."

Dante’s head snapped up. The sorrow in his eyes vanished in a split second, replaced instantly by the cold, merciless glare of a apex predator whose territory—and mate—was being threatened.

"Get the cars ready," Dante whispered, his voice dropping an octave into a lethal register. "If Victor so much as lays a finger on her, I’ll feed him to his own dogs."
