Chapter 18 - CheckmateThe rain poured heavily over the Chicago shipping docks as dawn broke on Thursday morning.

Pier 4 was usually a bustling hive of international trade, but today it was an eerie, deserted wasteland. Massive container cranes stood motionless against the gray sky, surrounded by a heavy tactical blockade of Moretti security vehicles.

Inside the primary dock office, Dante Moretti sat in a leather chair, swirling a cup of black coffee while looking out the reinforced glass window.

A black luxury sedan pulled abruptly onto the pier, its tires splashing through the puddles. Four armed men stepped out, flanking a tall, silver-haired Italian man in an expensive tailored suit—Don Marco Marinos, head of the Sicilian syndicate.

Marinos stepped into the dock office, his expression a mask of arrogant calm, though his eyes darted nervously at the armed Moretti guards stationed outside.

"Dante Moretti," Marinos greeted smoothly, stepping inside and brushing rain off his shoulders. "I didn't expect to be invited to such a... damp meeting."

"You weren't invited, Marco," Dante replied flatly, not even bothering to stand up. He took a slow sip of his coffee. "You trespassed."

Marinos chuckled, stepping closer to the desk. "You think you hold all the cards, Dante? You think freezing a few Swiss bank accounts and seizing a couple of container ships is going to stop centuries of Sicilian power?"

"It stopped yours," Dante said coldly, pressing a button on his desk remote.

A massive digital screen on the office wall flickered to life, displaying a live feed of Marinos’s primary European assets, warehouses, and offshore accounts. One by one, red confirmation stamps flashed across the screen: SEIZED. FROZEN. DISMANTLED.

Marinos’s confident smile vanished instantly. His face turned ashen as he stared at the screen in sheer disbelief. "How...? That's impossible. Those accounts are encrypted through military-grade protocols!"

"My wife is very good with foreign algorithms," Dante said smoothly, a faint smirk touching the corner of his lips. "And unlike you, I don't leave my back exposed."

Before Marinos could reach for the pistol concealed inside his jacket, the heavy office door swung open, and Mateo stepped in, pressing the cold barrel of a shotgun firmly against the back of Marinos’s neck.

"Don't even think about it," Mateo growled.

Marinos froze, his hands trembling slightly as he realized he had walked straight into a meticulously crafted trap. "What do you want?" he choked out.

"Two things," Dante stood up slowly, towering over the Sicilian boss with a terrifying, predatory intensity. "First, a signed confession relinquishing all claims to Chicago territory and my family's assets. Second... the exact location of Sofia Vale."

Marinos swallowed hard, realizing he had nothing left to bargain with. "Sofia... she’s just a pawn, Dante. She was the one who sold out the Sicilian syndicate to you in exchange for safe passage out of the country. She’s already on a private flight to South America."

Dante stared at Marinos for a long, silent moment before nodding slowly to Mateo.

"Lock him up in the black site with Victor," Dante commanded coldly. "Let them keep each other company."
