Chapter 10 - The Mastermind's Smile

The shock of the revelation hit Evelyn like a physical blow, but the sight of Victor groaning in pain on the floor pulled her back to reality. Fueled by righteous fury, Evelyn pulled the trigger.

The bullet struck Vane’s shoulder, shattering the control panel behind him. Sparks erupted in brilliant blue cascades as the acoustic pulse cut out. Victor instantly recovered, sweeping Vane’s feet out from under him and pinning the director to the cold floor.

Emergency alarms blared throughout the complex: CRITICAL SYSTEM FAILURE. FACILITY SELF-DESTRUCT IN 180 SECONDS.

“The cryogenic tanks!” Evelyn screamed as the amber liquid in Isabella’s pod began to drain rapidly.

Victor smashed the glass pod with a heavy fire extinguisher. Together, he and Evelyn pulled the pale, unconscious body of Isabella out of the tank, dragging her toward the emergency elevator alongside the gathered research files.

They reached the surface helipad just as the subterranean facility exploded beneath them, sending a massive plume of fire and steam into the stormy night sky. The private helicopter lifted off, soaring away from the burning island as Blackwood Isle collapsed into the ocean.

Three weeks later.

The quiet seaside estate in New Zealand was sunlit and peaceful. The five children played together on the pristine grass, supervised by their four surviving surrogate mothers, who had been granted permanent asylum and unlimited financial security through Victor’s dismantled empire.

Inside the estate’s sunroom, Isabella Hale lay in a plush medical bed, hooked to intravenous fluids. Her eyes fluttered open for the first time since her rescue.

Victor and Evelyn stood beside the bed. Victor took his former wife’s pale hand, his eyes shining with relief. “Isabella... you’re safe now. Vane is dead. The board is destroyed. The children are safe.”

Isabella looked at Victor, giving him a weak, tender smile. “Thank you, Victor... you saved me.”

Then, Isabella slowly turned her head toward Evelyn.

Her soft smile instantly vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, terrifying intelligence. The weak, sickly posture disappeared completely as Isabella sat up in bed, looking straight into her twin sister’s eyes.

“You played your part brilliantly, Evelyn,” Isabella whispered, her voice completely smooth and unburdened by illness.

Victor froze. “Isabella... what are you talking about?”

Isabella pulled the IV needles out of her arm, not flinching for a single second.

“Vane was a fool,” Isabella said with a sharp, dark laugh. “He thought he was controlling Project EOS. He thought he was the mastermind. He never realized I staged my own stasis, engineered my father-in-law’s death, and leaked the clinic files to that restaurant two weeks ago.”

Evelyn stepped back, pulling Sophie behind her. “You... you planned Sophie running to me?”

“I needed the children synchronized,” Isabella said, stepping out of bed with effortless grace. “And the link could only be activated if the five carriers were brought together by someone they trusted. You brought them all right to me, sister. The board is dead, the money is fully transferred to my hidden accounts, and the children are now fully awakened.”

Isabella looked out the window at the five toddlers playing on the lawn. On cue, all five children stopped playing, turned around, and looked up at the sunroom window with blank, synchronized smiles.

Isabella smiled back at Evelyn, her eyes cold as ice.

“Thank you, sister. Phase One is officially complete... Phase Two begins now.”
