Chapter 2 - Hunted in the Shadows

A private jet cut through the stormy skies above Western Europe, bound for Paris. Inside the cabin, Evelyn sat beside Victor while Sophie slept under a cashmere blanket. On the table between them lay the dossier for Subject 03: Clara Dupont, a former ballet dancer living in a quiet suburban apartment outside Paris with her son, Liam.

“You don’t have to do this,” Victor said, his tone softening as he watched Evelyn stroke Sophie’s golden curls. “I could have you and Sophie moved to a safe house in the Mediterranean. You’ve suffered enough.”

“She called me Mommy, Victor,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a fierce whisper. “I spent two years staring at an empty nursery, believing I was broken. I am not leaving her, and I am not letting whoever did this take another child.”

Victor stared at her, a crack appearing in his hardened, billionaire exterior. For the first time, he saw not just the waitress who had cleared tables at his favorite restaurant, but the biological mother of his child—a woman with an indestructible will.

The jet touched down in rainy Paris under cover of darkness. Armed security vehicles escorting Victor’s team raced toward Clara Dupont’s address. They burst through the door of the second-floor apartment, weapons raised, expecting a crime scene.

Instead, they found Clara sitting in a rocking chair, cradling a dark-haired boy who looked astonishingly like Sophie. Beside them stood three heavily armed men in black tactical gear, their weapons pointed directly at the entrance.

The lead operative lowered his night-vision goggles, revealing a tactical badge pinned to his chest. Victor froze.

It was the insignia of Hale Security Division One—Victor’s personal elite bodyguard unit.
