Chapter 18 - Shadows of the Past

Six months later.

The morning sun rose over a secluded, breathtaking estate nestled in the mountains of New Zealand. The horrors of Hale Biomedical, Project EOS, and Blackwood Isle were officially buried under miles of sealed legal documents and international investigations. Victor had liquidated ninety percent of Hale Biomedical, converting the vast wealth into a global foundation dedicated to hunting down illegal genetic syndicates and protecting exploited children.

On the manicured lawn, five children were playing tag. They no longer had cold, distant eyes. They laughed, ran, spilled fruit juice, and acted like completely normal three-year-olds. The four other surrogate mothers lived in custom villas on the same estate, forming a tight-knit, unbreakable community.

Victor walked out onto the veranda, holding two cups of warm coffee. He slid one into Evelyn’s hand, wrapping his arm around her waist as they watched Sophie run across the grass.

"The board of directors is officially dissolved," Victor said quietly. "Interpol confirmed this morning that all off-shore assets tied to Chronos Holdings have been seized."

Evelyn leaned her head against Victor’s shoulder, taking a sip of coffee. "And the children?"

"Their neural implants have been completely deactivated," Victor replied. "They're free, Evelyn. Truly free."

Victor reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee; he simply opened it, revealing a simple, elegant diamond ring that sparkled under the morning sun.

"You brought life back into this empty shell of a man, Evelyn," Victor said, his voice thick with raw emotion. "You showed me what family actually means. Will you marry me? Not for the company, not for the story... but because I love you with everything I have."

Evelyn looked up at Victor, tears of pure happiness welling in her eyes. "Yes," she whispered, kissing him deeply as the breeze blew across the valley.
