Chapter 9 - The DNA Trap

Vane pressed a key on the console. A high-frequency acoustic pulse hummed through the speakers, causing Victor to drop to his knees, clutching his head in agony. The neural feedback hit him through his radio headset, disabling the tactical team outside.
Evelyn remained standing, untouched by the frequency. She drew a sidearm, aiming it directly at Vane’s chest. “Turn it off!”
“Fascinating,” Vane murmured, watching Evelyn with academic interest. “The acoustic shockwave only affects those with the specific Hale male neural marker. But you... you are unaffected. Do you know why, Evelyn?”
“Because I’m not a monster like you,” she spat.
“No, my dear,” Vane smiled, bringing up a massive DNA sequencing file on the central glass screen. “Because you were never just a surrogate. Tell me, Evelyn, why do you think a elite clinic in Bern selected a penniless, orphaned waitress from America out of ten thousand applicants?”
Evelyn froze, her heart hammering against her ribs.
“Twenty-six years ago, a secret research lab in Geneva divided a single, highly engineered embryo into two,” Vane explained, his voice dripping with malice. “One half was raised in extreme wealth and luxury to become Isabella Vance. The other half was placed in an American orphanage under the name Evelyn Ward.”

Evelyn felt the world tilt beneath her feet. “No... no, that’s impossible!”
“You are Isabella’s identical twin sister,” Vane declared. “Sophie isn’t just your child by surrogate chance. She is 100% your biological daughter, carrying the pure, uncorrupted genetic code of the original line. Isabella was corrupt, diseased. You were the control subject!”
