Chapter 17 - Fall of the Architect

The massive server banks surrounding the room began to burst into flames as the emotional feedback loop overloaded the central processors. Alarms shrieked through the facility: CRITICAL HARDWARE FAILURE. CONTAINMENT BREACH.

Isabella clutched her head, screaming in agony as the neural backlash ruptured the synthetic implants inside her own brain. "My project... my empire!"

She stumbled backward on the catwalk, losing her balance as a server unit below exploded. Isabella fell over the railing, dangling by a single hand over the roaring inferno of burning hardware twenty feet below.

Evelyn ran to the edge, reaching down and grabbing Isabella’s wrist.

The two identical sisters looked at each other—one hanging over the flames, the other holding on with every ounce of strength left in her body.

"Give me your other hand!" Evelyn pleaded, her muscles tearing under the weight. "Isabella, grab my hand!"

Isabella looked up at Evelyn. For the first time, the cold, calculating expression was gone, replaced by a profound, hollow horror as she realized her life’s work was disintegrating into ash.

"We were never meant to exist together, Evelyn," Isabella whispered weakly. A dark stain of blood ran from her ear down her neck—the physical price of the neural collapse. "Protect the primary node..."

"No!" Evelyn cried out.

Isabella slipped her hand out of Evelyn’s grip, falling backward into the fiery abyss below.

"Evelyn! We have to go NOW!" Victor shouted, grabbing Evelyn around the waist as structural beams began falling from the ceiling.

Victor smashed the glass sphere’s emergency release. The five children dropped safely into Thomas and Victor’s arms. Evelyn scooped Sophie into her chest, wrapping her jacket around the trembling girl as they sprinted toward the escape pods.

Behind them, the oil platform shuddered, its supports buckling under the series of explosions, before sinking into the freezing, dark depths of the Arctic Ocean.
