Chapter 1 - The Woman No One Was Supposed to NoticeAt exactly nine seventeen, every door in the Grand Aurelia Hotel locked at once.

The orchestra continued playing.

Champagne still glittered beneath the chandeliers. Politicians, bankers, judges, and celebrities continued smiling for the cameras, unaware that the building had quietly become a cage.

Only one person noticed.

Elena Vale stood beside the ballroom’s walnut-paneled wall, wearing a black one-shoulder gown and a bruise no amount of makeup could hide. A thin cut marked the corner of her mouth. Her fingers trembled around a champagne glass she had never touched.

Across the room, billionaire Victor Sloane laughed with three powerful men.

One of them was Elena’s husband.

Adrian Cross looked perfect in his tuxedo. Handsome. Controlled. Untouchable. No one watching him would have guessed that, three hours earlier, he had pressed Elena against their bedroom mirror and warned her not to embarrass him tonight.

“You will smile,” he had whispered. “You will stand beside me. And you will forget what you heard.”

But Elena had not forgotten.

She had heard Victor and Adrian discussing payments to judges, missing witnesses and something called Project Lazarus. She had also heard her own name.

“She knows too much,” Victor had said.

Adrian’s answer had broken her more deeply than the blow that followed.

“Then deal with her after the gala.”

Now Adrian glanced toward Elena and gave her the smile of a devoted husband. To the cameras, it looked affectionate.

To Elena, it was a warning.

Her phone vibrated inside her clutch.

UNKNOWN NUMBER:

If you want to survive tonight, answer when I call. Do not let your husband see.

Elena’s breath caught.

Standing ten feet behind Victor was Noah Kane, the billionaire’s silent head of security. Tall, broad-shouldered and dressed in a black tuxedo, Noah watched the ballroom without appearing to watch anything.

Then his eyes met Elena’s.

He touched two fingers to his cuff.

Her phone rang.

Elena stepped behind a marble column and answered.

“Hello?”

A distorted voice spoke quietly.

“You have seven minutes before your husband takes you upstairs.”

“Who is this?”

“Someone who knows what they did to your sister.”

Elena went still.

Her younger sister, Lily, had died in a car accident six years earlier. At least, that was what the police report claimed.

“What did you say?”

“Lily didn’t lose control of her car,” the voice continued. “Her brakes were cut.”

Elena’s knees nearly failed.

“By whom?”

“Look at Victor Sloane.”

Across the ballroom, Victor raised his glass while Adrian and the other men laughed.

“He ordered it,” the caller said. “But your husband made the payment.”

Elena stared at Adrian.

The man she had loved for eleven years.

The man who had held her at Lily’s funeral.

The man who had promised to find whoever was responsible.

The caller spoke again.

“Inside your clutch is a second phone. At exactly nine twenty-four, press the red button.”

Elena opened the clutch.

Beneath her lipstick lay a phone she had never seen before.

“What happens when I press it?”

“The truth comes out.”

“And if I don’t?”

A pause followed.

“Then you won’t leave this hotel alive.”

The call ended.

At that moment, Adrian appeared beside her.

He placed one hand around her waist, his fingers pressing painfully into her bruised ribs.

“Who were you talking to?”

Elena slipped the strange phone beneath her palm.

“No one.”

Adrian smiled.

“Good. Victor wants to see us upstairs.”

The ballroom clock changed to 9:23.

Elena had sixty seconds to decide whether the mysterious caller was trying to save her—or make her the first casualty of a war.
