Chapter 8 - When the Victim Stopped RunningElena confronted Lily on the library roof as helicopters circled overhead.

Rain swept across the city.
Lily held the master activation device.
“You can still stand beside me,” she said. “We can punish every man who stole our lives.”
“This isn’t justice.”
“Justice is a story powerful people tell the weak so they’ll wait patiently.”
Lily offered Elena control of the politicians, corporations and intelligence agencies connected to Lazarus.
For one dangerous second, Elena imagined accepting.
No one would ever strike her again. No one would hide the truth from her. She could erase Adrian, destroy her father and rebuild the world around her pain.
Then she understood the real purpose of Lazarus.
It did not merely steal identities.
It convinced wounded people that control was the same as freedom.
Elena stepped closer.
“You were right about one thing. I always need to believe I’m saving someone.”
She embraced Lily.
Then she drove Adrian’s data key into the activation device.
Every screen in the city turned on.
Instead of releasing the protected identities, Elena transmitted only the records of Lazarus’s operators and paying clients. Judges, ministers, billionaires and assassins appeared with authenticated evidence of their crimes.
Lily stared at her.
“How?”
“Mom built a third option.”
Evelyn had secretly coded a separation protocol years earlier.
Senator Vale tried to flee aboard his helicopter. Noah intercepted him at the landing pad.
The senator raised his gun toward Elena.
Adrian, wounded but conscious, stepped into the line of fire.
The bullet struck him.
Noah shot the senator in the shoulder, and federal agents pulled him to the ground.
Lily escaped during the confusion.
Before disappearing, she whispered to Elena:
“You still don’t understand. I didn’t create the gala plan.”
“Then who did?”
Lily smiled sadly.
“Ask your husband why his data key worked.”
Adrian was rushed into surgery.
Elena examined the key and discovered its creation date.
It had been manufactured seven years earlier—one year before Lily’s supposed death.
Adrian had known about the third protocol all along.
More troublingly, his authorization level was higher than Victor’s and Senator Vale’s.
